SAFR Sports, the innovator in advanced helmet cover technology, today announced groundbreaking results from a study comparing concussion rates in high school football players across two consecutive seasons, 2023 and 2024. The data reveals a remarkable 48% reduction in concussions among teams that utilized SAFR helmet covers, underscoring its effectiveness.
The results of the study, conducted in collaboration with 18 public high schools in a large metropolitan area, compare concussion rates in schools using SAFR helmet covers to those relying on standard helmets without additional protection. While five schools implemented the SAFR helmet covers for practices and games, 13 schools did not, creating a valuable comparison group.
Key findings include:
- Teams Using SAFR Helmet Covers: Concussions decreased by 48%, from 31 in 2023 to 16 in 2024.
- Teams Without Helmet Covers: Concussions increased by 34%, from 50 in 2023 to 67 in 2024.
- Overall Impact: A clear and compelling reduction in injuries when SAFR helmet covers are used which is also supported by cutting-edge data from Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab testing.
“The SAFR helmet covers allow for football to be played in its purist, most physical form without sacrificing the health and well-being of the student-athlete.
Student-athlete health and well being has to be the number one priority. Parents/guardians are trusting us to put their student-athletes in a position to be successful on and off the field. This is a responsibility that must be taken seriously and our commitment to the SAFR helmet covers, backed in research data, does just that.
From a practicality and logistical standpoint the SAFR helmet covers were our best option because once they are on the helmet, they stay on. So not only is the protection top of the line, it is one less thing for our busy student-athletes to misplace or forget. Our players have their helmets everyday- which means they are protected every day.
We went from double digit diagnosed concussions over the past 2 seasons (without SAFR) to zero diagnosed concussions this season for players wearing the SAFR helmet covers.”
Evans Stoughton, Head Coach Stroughton High School
“These findings highlight the critical role of SAFR Helmet Covers in protecting young athletes. The reduction in concussions, paired with other benefits, makes a strong case for universal adoption at all levels of play.”
John Zeglinski, SAFR CEO
